ITIL v3 Service Design is both the second ITIL v3 publication in the ITIL v3 Lifecycle Suite, and the second phase of the ITIL Service Lifecycle.  The ITIL Service Lifecycle comprises the following ‘phases’ - Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operations, Continual Service Improvement.  Each have their own separate publication.  Those of you familiar with ISO Standards, you’ll notice the ITIL Service Lifecycle phases closely match “Plan - Do - Check - Act” found in all ISO Standards.

Service Design specifically focuses on the design and development of services. This includes the design of service solutions, service portfolio, architecture, processes, measurement systems and metrics.  Various service delivery models are presented - Insourcing, Outsourcing, Co-Sourcing, Multi-Sourcing, Business Process Outsourcing, Application Service Provision and Knowledge Process Outsourcing.  ITIL v3 processes which fall within Service Design include: Service Catalogue Management, Service Level Management, Capacity Management, Availability Management, IT Service Continuity Management, Information Security Management, Supplier Management. Additionally, Service Design technology related activities include: Development of Requirements, Data and Information Management and Application Management. Service Design details the various organisational roles, for example, Process Owner, Service Design Manager, Service Catalogue Manager, Service Level Manager, Availability Manager and Security Manager.  The outputs from the Service Strategy phase input into Service Design.  Service Design outputs input to phase 3 of the ITIL Service Lifecycle; Service Transition.
